Your Itinerary Guide to Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia is an up-and-coming tourist destination ~ with its beautiful beaches, tropical climate, and historical walled city - there truly is something for everyone to enjoy here. I wanted to give you an inside look at our week long trip to Cartagena and share some of the top things you need to check out in this beautiful city!

Old Town

First up is the absolute ‘no brainer’ spot everyone needs to experience - Old Town! Situated right by Colombia’s coast line, this historical part of the city is often referred to as the Walled City or Old Town due to the 11 km of limestone wall surrounding it. The wall construction began in the 16th century as a form of defense against pirates and other invaders. It took a total of 200 years to complete the project, so rightfully so, they are an architectural masterpiece!

There are many ways to get around this part of the city. Everything is very walkable and with that, wandering around Old Town really helps you appreciate the history and the cultures that coexist in this space. The amount of amazing food vendors, shops and beautiful colonial architecture created such a unique experience that you really need to witness for yourself.

Getsemani

The next ‘must see’ spot in Cartagena is the neighborhood of Getsemani, most famously known for its street art, colorful houses and umbrella lined alleys.

This lively part of Cartagena is another treasure like I’ve never experienced before. Walking through the narrow streets of Getsemani, there is so much art and culture to take in. Making your way through the neighborhood you’ll see the iconic Calles de las Sombrillas, Umbrella Street. The overhanging umbrellas add so much life and color to this area ~ and for all the influencers out there, this will be a top Instragrammable spot for you to go in Cartagena.

As you keep walking through the streets of Getsemani, you’ll come across the Plaza de la Trinidad. This is a small square in the center of the neighborhood, known for its live music, food vendors, and colorful buildings and murals. When we visited, it was the most perfect, clear, starry night and in front of the church was just a musician and his guitar singing beautiful Colombian music. My husband and I danced along to the songs; it was such a beautiful and culturally fulfilling experience.

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas

Now, as I mentioned before, Cartagena was a military forward city in the 15th and 16th centuries and took on huge projects to protect the city. This fortress was built in a really strategic location in order to protect the city by land or sea.

You can take tours of this amazing landmark; you’ll see the underground tunnels, canons that were used in battle, and unbelievable views of the Cartagena skyline. I highly recommend seeing this piece of Colombian history.

Dreams Karibana Cartagena Resort

Now this last place isn’t a specific tourism spot BUT if you’re looking for an all-inclusive option, this is an incredible resort to book your vacation at. This is where we stayed our week in Colombia and I couldn’t recommend it more. The staff members were amazing, the food & drinks were delicious, and the private beach was breathtaking (especially at sunset). So much fun to be had here whether that’s relaxing while reading a book, going to the spa, or playing a round of golf, Dreams Karibana is the perfect all-inclusive destination. Check out their website here if you’re looking to book a stay!

Overall, Cartagena has SO much to offer for anyone to enjoy. All the art, culture, architecture, and beaches makes this a perfect vacation destination.
